Nutrition is, sadly, one of the most misunderstood and under-researched areas of veterinary medicine. At the same time, it is one of our greatest tools in combating diseases and keeping our pets healthy. It is always easier to prevent a disease than it is to treat it, and nutrition is key factor in that prevention. Unfortunately, good research on nutrition has remained a neglected area of study in many veterinary schools. As a result, there is a lack of good, consistent information and advice on nutrition.
At the Animal Care Center, we focus on helping clients understand the options available to their pet. We also focus on teaching you how to read the labels on your pet food, so you know for sure what exactly you are feeding to your pet. It is also crucial to remember that your pet’s nutritional requirements will change as they age, and will be different depending on breed, size, age, and health. Our veterinarians will work with you to determine what nutritional requirements your pet has, based on those criteria and others, such as exposure and energy level.
Unfortunately, some companies are reckless in their marketing and convince well-meaning pet owners to do things that are not healthy for their pets. If you have any questions regarding your pet’s nutrition or what you should and should not be feeding them, do not hesitate to ask your veterinarian. Remember, we love your animals almost as much as you do, and want to do everything we can to help them be happy, healthy, and safe.
