Helping Your Dog Recover After TPLO Surgery

August 06, 2020

The ultimate success of a TPLO surgery depends on the recovery process.

To regain optimal movement, your dog will need special care and carefully monitored activity throughout recovery. The skilled surgeons and dedicated rehabilitation team at Animal Care Center of Castle Pines are dedicated to the success of your dog's TPLO recovery. We want to see all of our patients back on all four feet as soon as possible.

TPLO Surgery at Animal Care Center

One of the most common and most serious injuries in dogs is a torn CCL (the canine ACL). Tearing the cranial cruciate ligament could permanently impair a dog's mobility. Although some CCL ruptures happen because of accidents, they most often result from a degenerative disease. Surgical intervention to repair the rupture and stabilize the joint will prevent permanent damage.

When compared with other procedures, dogs who undergo TPLO surgery recover more quickly and get back on their feet sooner. During a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy, the tibia is repositioned to stabilize and support the femur. A specialized plate and screws will hold the bones in place and promote healing.

Pain Management for TPLO Surgery

Recovery is always more effective at home in a comfortable, familiar environment. Animal Care Center's pain management protocol for TPLO surgeries will allow your dog to go home on the same day as their procedure. We administer preemptive analgesics along with pain suppressants, which significantly decrease the stress and pain associated with surgery.

Immediate Aftercare

Your veterinarian at Animal Care Center of Castle Pines will give you instructions to follow. We'll go over all of the recovery details with you at discharge, and answer any questions you have about the healing process. The most important thing is to do is to restrict activity so that your dog can rest and heal. Keep your dog as calm and comfortable as possible, especially during the first few days following surgery.

Your Dog's TPLO Recovery

Once again, the most essential part of the healing process is restricting movement. It could take up to six months before some dogs are able to return to their normal levels of activity. Too much activity can lead to delayed healing, soft tissue injury, and even implant breakage, so it's extremely important to restrict your dog's movement until their leg has completely healed.

Protect the incision and keep the wound clean and dressed until it has healed. Make sure that your dog has easy access to soft beds. Place rugs or mats to provide traction on slippery floors and carpeted stairs next to furniture to make it easier for your dog to get around the house. Maintain gentle daily routines, but keep it slow. Your veterinarian will advise you on how to best increase activity and gradually build back up to normal activity levels.

TPLO Rehabilitation

At discharge, you'll meet with our canine rehabilitation team to go over at-home care instructions as well as in-hospital rehabilitation recommendations. We will also provide you with basic training in manual therapy and simple exercises to help improve your pet's recovery. Our committed rehabilitation team will guide you through the post-surgery recovery process and help you every step of the way.

Regaining optimal function after TPLO surgery requires both at-home care and professional rehabilitation. Animal Care Center of Castle Pines offers water therapy, physical therapy, massage therapy, and laser therapy at our in-hospital rehabilitation facility. We will set up an individualized plan for your pet and monitor their progress through regular therapy sessions.
